Have you seen loads of articles that claim to know one particular ‘magic’ exercise that will help you lose weight like no other? Would you like to know which particular exercise I recommend for weight loss? The answer is: ALL of the exercises that you CONSISTENTLY do.
Doing one particular exercise isn’t going to give you results; it’s sticking to a routine that will bring you the results you desire. It’s more about psychology than physiology, finding an exercise routine that will keep you interested will bring you success as consistency is the key.
In a nutshell: Many people don’t succeed long term because they only build physical fitness but don’t develop mental fitness.
What keeps you interested in exercising long term? This is a topic I think about regularly as a Trainer as I’m always looking for ways to get under my clients skin and turn them into exercise lovers, it is my passion.
Of course it is critical that a Trainer has the required technical skills and knowledge in exercise programming, but a great Trainer is also able to coach you toward building helpful thought patterns so that you associate healthy living and exercise with more pleasure than pain and are pulled towards your goals rather than pushed.
I don’t just see my Personal Training clients once a week to exercise, they check in with me regularly to discuss their week, any extra workouts they’ve done without me (some of it homework I’ve given them), struggles they may be enduring and nutritional guidance/tips. I focus on empowering them to make better health choices not through discipline, but through desire.
Our job is to coach our clients on their focus and mindset so they end up craving a healthy lifestyle and it no longer becomes a chore. We like to say that we are a reflection of your inner coach; we’ll take on some of that role until you’ve tapped into your own drivers and have a stronger line of communication with your self-worth.
We’ve been known to tell clients they no longer need our personal coaching as they’ve adapted to their new lifestyle and are achieving great results. At this stage they will often jump into the group classes to maintain their results and perhaps come back for a Personal Training refresher now and then.
So whatever you do, make sure that your fitness plan is more than just another ‘miracle diet’ or ‘magic’ fat shredding exercise – ensure it will support you to develop mental fitness. You will then have the resources to succeed and be fulfilled in many areas of your life.
